Tourism

"Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu" is very near Porangahau.
At 85 letters, it has been listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest place name in the world and translates roughly as "The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one".

Walking Treks

There are a variety of short and long guided walks.

A three hour cliff walk that takes in the back of the McLean Family farm walking the edge of spectacular cliffs taking in the vast ever moving ocean.

Porangahau Country Club

The Porangahau Coutnry Club is a multi-sports club situated in one of the oldest settlements in New Zealnd.  Golf, fishing, tennis, netball, the Arts, the Coastal Bike Ride and other activities take place at or from the Country Club.  Porangahau is arguably New Zealand's best kept secret.

Conservation

McLeans Bush (Porangahau)
Located off Whangaehu Road appoximately 16km south of Porangahau.
This 27 hectare reserve was gifted to the Crown by the McLean family in 1973 and is an important remnant of pre-European coastal forest, of which there are few examples left in Hawkes Bay. There are no tracks within the reserve, but a stile at the sign-posted layby indicates the access point to the reserve.

Richard Kibblewhite is the very able Captain of a large tandem boat with many years of experience with fishing of all types. A day out with the capable Captain Kibblewhite catching fish on a beautiful day is highly recommended.
